Hometown Story

Somewhere in the small corner of North-Eastern Arkansas is a little town that goes by the name of Paragould, Arkansas. This town had the privilege of being known as my, Lucas Bennett, hometown. Paragould is filled with history, stories, and facts from here to Ten Buck Too. One of the most famous things about Paragould is their intense rivalry between the two high schools in town. Those schools being Greene County Tech and Paragould High School. Growing up here it was hostile territory anytime somebody brought up Greene County Tech being that I went to Paragould. The emotions towards each other boil over into flat out hatred.

During my time at Paragould, from a young age they engrave this rivalry into you. You bleed, sweat, and cry Wreck Tech. Every time we played them in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, etc we got hyped. Pep rallies were a staple of Paragould High School. When it came down to the game, win or lose, words were going to be exchanged, objects were going to be thrown, and ejections were a must. I always went all out for my school pride. I had too because my friends, family, and fellow students never let the aura around this opportunity to show why we were the better school die down.

However, for Karen Merimon (my mother) she saw it from the other side at a different time. My mother attended Greene County Tech from 1987-1991. Though it may have been a different school and a different time, the feelings remain the same. “My favorite part of going to the games was the animosity between us. We legit hated each other”, talking about her experiences at the games. “We’d chant Cram the Rams any chance we get”. She remembers a different vibe in the air on two Friday’s every season when we would meet each other in conference matchups. She remembers one time Tech even met Paragould in the State Tournament. “You could cut the tension with a pocket knife, it was so thick like butter”, yes my mother actually said that.

No matter what side you were on this rivalry is sure to live on with an ever growing wave of one upmanship and some friendly hatred for years to come. As my 10 year old brother, who now is a fourth grader at Paragould Elementary, exclaimed to me while interviewing my mom “Wreck Tech”.
